Wavefront Lasik is a New Customized Laser Eye Surgery Technique
By Chris Crowe

Wavefront Lasik Eye Surgery, otherwise known as Custom Wavefront Lasik, is a procedure which can correct common vision problems like nearsightedness.

Lasik in general is a rather popular vision repair technique for quite a few reasons. Lasik Surgery is known for being a very quick and relatively painless medical procedure. Each eye tends to take around ten minutes. Healing from wavefront lasik is also very fast, generally taking no longer than a couple of days.

The wavefront procedure is known for being more precise than the normal or standard technique and is utilized to cure "higher-order" aberrations in the eye.

During the procedure, a beam of light is sent into the eye, and with the use of various data points, a map is created with the information sent back to the wavefront sensor. The way this works is when the light returns to the sensor, it reads distortions which indicate areas in the eye that have deficiencies.

The map that is created is used to pinpoint problem areas, which are the aberrations mentioned before. Once these aberrations are discovered, the physician can treat the vision problems in a very efficient and effective way. Wavefront is a more precise procedure and therefore can create better results, but is also generally more expensive. Custom lasik is known as "custom" because it is customized more to the individual eye in an effort to better correct any problems there may on the corneal layer.

In order to alleviate any pain that may result during the procedure, the patient is given numbing eye drops and often a mild sedative to make it as painless as possible. It is also necessary that someone drive the patient to and from the clinic.

The wavefront technology has actually been around for a while and was not made solely for the surgery in which it is now used. Astronomers have used it for years as a way of adjusting the optics of their lenses. Ingeniously, the same science is used now to gather information about the individual eye, create a map, and reshape the cornea using an excimer laser. Don't be scared off by this even though is sounds ominous. It may be a good idea to have a wavefront diagnostic on the eyes as it is a great way to find the problem areas you might suffer from.

It is true that wavefront custom lasik, LASEK, Epi-Lasik, and PRK is the superior procedure (as I mentioned before), but it also important to know the differences between the procedures as some patients may not qualify as a candidate for various reasons. Your eye doctor or vision specialist will be able to guide you in the proper direction. If you aren't sure, you can always seek a second opinion from another opthalmologist.

Wavefront-guided refractive eye surgery, which is a longer name for lasik wavefront, may cost a little more, but it may be the best option for you and your situation. However, you should know and your doctor will probably inform you that any laser eye surgery is not a perfect procedure. It is not possible for every single aberration to be corrected. Furthermore, you may not be a candidate for this type of surgery if you do not meet the specifications.
